Summary

HSRC led statewide training and technical assistance efforts to support and promote North Carolina Department of Transportation (NCDOT) initiatives around complete streets. Beginning in 2012, HSRC developed a two-day training course designed to equip local, regional, and state planners and engineers with the tools they need to put Complete Streets principles into action. The training modules were based on content from the North Carolina Complete Streets Implementation Guidelines. A series of three regional workshops was followed by 27 two-day training courses and a one-day statewide Complete Streets Summit. These trainings and events were held across the state between 2012 and 2014, and included a mix of field exercises, case studies, and discussion of the design guidelines. The events reached a total estimated audience of more than 600 planners, engineers and health professionals across the state.

Beginning in 2017, HSRC began working with NCDOT to engage transportation professionals and community organizations across the State in support of renewed Complete Streets policy improvements and guidance. HSRC developed materials and hosted six community workshops that were centered on collaborative partnerships to support complete streets implementation. A total of 226 professionals, community members, advocates and local decision makers attended the workshops in 2019.

Research Impact, Results, and Findings

The training program provided essential outreach to North Carolina transportation professionals and their partners about complete streets policy, planning and design. The events enabled stakeholders from different parts of the state, representing different fields and backgrounds, to come together and discuss shared goals around multimodal transportation and safety.
