Mike Vann joined HSRC as a Research Assistant in November 2015 and was hired as a Junior Geospatial Data Analyst in July 2018. One project he has been involved with include coding crashes between bicyclists or pedestrians and motor vehicles by analyzing police reports, using PBCAT software to assign crashes to groups and geolocating the location, another project involved analyzing cyclist and pedestrian behavior at protected intersections. He has also created cluster maps using ArcGIS of high-crash locations and performed statistical analysis of crash types and crash factors for summary reports.
Mike has a M.S. in Geospatial Information Science and Technology from North Carolina State University. His Master’s project involved using GIS to select potential wildlife corridors for an endangered elephant species that would reduce human conflict. He has also done consulting work using GIS in affordable apartment site selection for DHIC, Inc. a Raleigh, NC based non-profit. Additionally, Mike has a B.A. in Psychology from New York University and is also interested in behavioral aspects of traffic safety. He lives in Carrboro and enjoys hiking and reading.
