Katie Harmon joined HSRC as a Postdoctoral Research Associate in September 2018 and transitioned to a full Research Associate in late 2019. At HSRC, Dr. Harmon’s primary role is the application of epidemiologic and injury surveillance methods for the purpose of injury prevention. She is especially interested in averting injuries and fatalities among vulnerable road users (e.g., pedestrians, bicyclists, older adults, children) and uncovering longstanding safety disparities in our communities. Recently, Dr. Harmon’s research has focused on using novel methods to examine the safety implications of emerging modes of transportation, such as e-scooters and e-bikes. Finally, Dr. Harmon applies advanced data science techniques, including data linkage, to better understand traffic safety outcomes, as well as other public health problems. In addition to transportation safety, Dr. Harmon has research interests in the areas of alcohol and drug use disorders, firearm violence, suicide, and injury surveillance data quality.

Katie received her doctorate in epidemiology at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, with a concentration in injury prevention. She also has a M.P.H. from Saint Louis University, with a joint concentration in epidemiology and environmental and occupational health and a B.S. in environmental health science from The University of Georgia. In her free time, Katie enjoys running, hiking, camping, along with her partner and dog.
